What is Concierge?
The word Concierge is relatively unknown in the Czech Republic, or it is better say, it’s not known at all. We have met only a few people who knew what the word meant. Therefore, whenever. We are asked about our occupation, we rather say I’m a receptionist; firstly, it simplifies communication and secondly, we don’t have to take a long time to explain where we work or what the content and purpose of our job is. We found a few words on the website of the Singapore section of Les Clefs d’Or about our work, who we are and what exactly we do:
A Concierge is described by travelling clients as a “part man Friday, part Sancho Panza with a goodly amount of Merlin and Houdini thrown in.” Whatever the ingredients, he, and now more increasingly she, will do anything humanly possible to achieve guest satisfaction.
Here is a list of just a few of the day-to-day routines and services a Concierge renders:
- Air tickets and all the changes relating to them
- Incoming and outgoing mail
- Faxes and messages to guests
- Transfers, taxi
- Arranging sightseeing tours, reserving guides
- Restaurant reservations
- Hotel reservations
- Shopping tips
- In other words, anything that is legal and ethical.
Additionally, a Concierge must tackle all kinds of unique requests and assignments as well which, if successfully accomplished, are adequately compensated. Each Concierge has developed a network of acquaintances, friends and contacts to simplify his or her work in the future.
